London on Fire!

So, similar to the French circa 2005, the British have decided to burn down their own country. Granted the French seemed to specifically target cars for the most part, the British on the other hand decided to take it up a notch. Cars, buildings, but not people…yet. The Prime minister graciously cut his Italian vacation short and called Parliament back to deal with the violence, which has put an extreme amount of pressure on the police force. As it stands police from all corners are being called in to regain control of the city from the roving mobs.

And that’s just what the offenders in this riot are, roving mobs. There is no grand unifying force here. There was no police beating of a minority. There was no terrorist attack. There was no protest that got out of hand. There is no grand want from the mobs. Some of them say they are rioting because of the cutbacks on public spending, something that desperately needed to be done to keep Great Britain fiscally solvent. But for the most part, people seem to be rioting because it’s fun to smash stuff, burn things down, steal things, and in general ruin other people’s lives.

So as the relatively rational person I am, I have to say. What the hell London? I mean, was the world financial crisis not enough for you? Do you feel the need to destroy your own damn city. Do you feel the need to endanger your own neighbor’s ability to pay their bills and own their own homes by burning down their stores and shops? Seriously no one thinks things through.

One Response to London on Fire!

Well after digging through a lot of news, there seemed to be one plausible instantiation of the riots, that being the pre-planned arrest of a know gang member who drew a gun and was shot to death by the police raiding him in a neighborhood filled with gangs, poor, and citizenry allgidly regularly abused by the police force. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/09/london-riots-mark-duggan-inquest) (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/09/tottenham-riots-youths-police)

After the initial riots in Tottenham, more started springing up somewhat at random supposedly thanks to social networking and the use of cheap blackberry smart phones to quickly organize not protests, but actual riots. But apparently the majority of the riots are more looting oriented. Pillage, then burn.
