Category 7! Oh No! We’re Doomed! Right?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Okay. Now let’s talk a little more rationally. The IAEA raised the event rating of the Fukushima accident to Level 7. The IAEA event scale goes from levels 1 to 7.  The change in the event rating was not due to any sudden change or new development at the plant. Just a re-evaluation of the radiation that had been released from the plant so far.

However, since Level 7 is the highest rating on the IAEA scale, and the Chernobyl accident is the only other event which has been classified as a level 7, all the news outlets are using this as an opportunity to re-hype the nuclear hysteria.

Things to keep in mind. The problems at Fukushima are bad. The problems at Fukushima are nowhere near as bad as the problems that occurred at Chernobyl. A level 7 event is simply the highest rating there is, so anything bad will get a level 7.
